About House Beautiful

House Beautiful is a small guesthouse in Rosendal, a town of trees and old sandstone between Ficksburg and Senekal. The house sits behind a garden, with a long shaded patio along the front of it and a braai area under the trees at the bottom of the lawn.

There are six bedrooms: three inside the main house and three in the garden wing. Guests in all six share the self-catering kitchen, the lounge and the dining room, which is what makes the place work for a family weekend or a group travelling together.

Rooms are named after the spices and herbs of the garden — Calamus, Spikenard, Camphire, Myrrh, Frankincense and Saffron.

Rosendal, and what's around it

The town has two general stores, a bakery, a bottle store, a hardware store and a petrol station, so a self-catering stay is easy to provision. There are restaurants and a bar in town, tennis courts and an art gallery, and Sunday church services down the road.

Further out there is cycling, running and hiking, horse riding, cave exploring, bird watching and the local markets — and Clarens is an easy day trip.

Rosendal is a small Eastern Free State town between Ficksburg and Senekal, at the foot of the Witteberg range. It was laid out in the early 1900s and was close to empty by the 1980s; today it is a village of about 140 people where artists, writers and tiny-home builders have settled. There is more to do here than the size of the place suggests.
