Things to do
Rosendal is a small Eastern Free State town between Ficksburg and Senekal, at the foot of the Witteberg range. It was laid out in the early 1900s and was close to empty by the 1980s; today it is a village of about 140 people where artists, writers and tiny-home builders have settled. There is more to do here than the size of the place suggests.
In town
All of this is in Rosendal itself.
Heritage District walk
A free guided walk through the restored early-1900s buildings, or a self-guided audio walk you follow by QR code.
Art galleries
ark. contemporary and Stallery Gallery both show local work, and Yolla's hangs affordable art alongside the bar.
Craft studios
Kaboedel Craft does handmade glasswork and painted wool; Klay runs ceramic-painting workshops on Thursday to Saturday evenings.
Rosendal Nature Trail
Free 2 km and 4.5 km walking trails in town, open to walkers, hikers, cyclists and dogs.
Village market and car boot sale
A monthly Saturday market of handcrafted goods, and a monthly car boot sale at Agterplaas for antiques, tools and thrifting.
Bird watching
A top-50 local species checklist is available in town. The annual Birding Weekend brings in expert guides.
Tennis and the labyrinth
The tennis club plays casual Saturday afternoons and the first session is free. There is a labyrinth in Hobhouse Park, Botha Street.
Wellness
Yoga classes for adults, children and chair-based sessions, plus massage, reiki and colour therapy.
Sunday church services
The Dutch Reformed church is the landmark in the middle of town, and services are open to visitors.
Ghost walks and poetry
Tours of the town's supposedly haunted heritage landmarks, and Poetry with a Punch, a spoken-word evening every second month.
Eat & drink
Rosendal has cafes and a wine bar; the restaurants further afield are worth the drive.
Krummel Café & Patisserie
Sourdough and pastries.
The Service Station
A wine bar serving Southern-European-style tapas.
Yolla's
Pizza, and the town's gathering spot — it hosts the street braai.
Rosendal Handelshuis
Waffles and specialty drinks.
Also in town: Rooi Tamatie, Sonneblom Hoekie, Potluck, Station Bar.
Out & about
The district is good for walking, riding, caves and birds rather than anything organised.
Cycling the gravel roads
There are more than 300 km of gravel roads around town, and an informal weekly social ride that is open to all levels.
Hiking trails on the surrounding farms
Two walks on a farm about 6 km toward Ficksburg — a short one and a longer one of around 9 km — with Witteberg foothill views and good birding. The longer trail suits adults and children over 12.
Horse riding
There are outrides on the farms around town. Tell us when you would like to go and we will arrange the closest one for you.
Cave exploring
The sandstone hills around town are full of caves and overhangs, and the game farms have San rock art.
Holkrans sunset drive
A guided drive up into the mountains for sunset, with transport for up to seven people.
Day trips
Rosendal makes a quiet base for the whole Eastern Free State circuit — the same mountains and the same day-trip range as Clarens, with far fewer people in them.
